In 1999, Native Desert Plants Nursery was formed to open an internet store selling local (South West Texas) native seeds to the world
with hopes of sharing the desert plant adaption of survival on low water consumption in xeriscaping.
While gathering desert plant seeds for my internet store,
Nativedesertplants.com, my newy found green thumb led me to putting some of them in the ground to grow.
The vigor in which the seeds sprouted and grew led me to studying the green house method of growing plants.
Over the years, we have developed the largest stock of rare nursery grown " Yucca Plants " in Texas.
Many of the successful ones include the majestic "Great White" ( Yucca faxoniana), Yucca rostrata and Yucca elata of West Texas Big Bend country.
My area in South West Texas is diverse with Yucca torreyi, Yucca rupicola, Yucca treculeana, Yucca thompsoniana, Yucca baccata and several Yucca's that have cross pollinated and do not fit into any category.
One thing leading to another, the plants we started by seed in 1999 have grown to a size that was suitable to sell in a retail nursery.
Considering the shortage of water looming in the future and the need for water stingy plants,
we opened a retail outlet,
Yucca Kingdom Nursery, located on six acres in Del Rio, Texas .
We developed a customer base in the Austin area and started a regular delivery route. The 200+ mile distance from Del Rio soon required a rest point at the end of the delivery route. We bought a five acre plot in the Lockhart area just south of Austin and placed our 21 foot camper on it for a rest point over night. The 5 acre plot is in the "Black Land Prairie" just East of the San Marcos river. It was a pleasant surprise to find most of the desert plants that we propagated in Del Rio grew wild sparsely in the fertile black soil in the area our 5 acre plot was located. Yucca plants are native, even robust "Mesquite" trees everywhere.
One thing lead to another and we were thinking about a permanent location just 30 miles South of Austin for Yucca Kingdom Nursery. In the summer of 2008 we began to relocate. Over a six month period We moved all our green houses and plants to Spoke Hollow Road West of Lockhart. We should be up and running by the spring of 2010.
